LBJ for President: “Daisy” (aka, “Bomb”)

This is considered by many to be the most effective political ad ever. The year was 1964, and LBJ was running against Barry Goldwater, considered by many to be quite conservative (by the standards of the time, at least), and even dangerous. Fairly or unfairly, this ad played on that perception, helped make it stick, and… helped take LBJ to one of the biggest landslides in presidential history.

I remember showing this to a group of college freshmen when I was in grad school and was a TA for a communcations class.
Personally, I think this a tremendous political ad.

The college kids laughed at it.

This legendary commercial only ran once! Which, I suppose, was enough, given Goldwater’s scary reputation. Some of Goldwater’s own advisers thought the race was over when, accepting the nomination at the GOP convention, he made his famous statement about extremism being no vice.
